Morning Coffee 8/23/14 The Beatitudes: The Poor In Spirit

August 23, 2014

“One day as he saw the crowds gathering, Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around him, and he began to teach them. “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.” (Matthew 5:1-3 NLT)

Jesus is beginning His Sermon on the Mount, He Starts with the first of beatitudes. “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.” (Matthew 5:3 NLT)

Christ is not speaking about being physically poor but, about being spiritually poor. In other words we see how deeply broken and empty we are inside. And we don’t try to cover it up, we don’t put on a front like everything is ok. We openly admit our need for Christ and His Word. Pride will keep us from admitting our need for Christ, but humility will blow the door wide open. It will do us no good to keep things bottled up and acting like we are ok. (Please forgive the graphic description) If your arm was ripped off with blood gushing out you would not try to hide it, you are going to find help as soon and as quickly as possible! Our spirit needs nourishment; it needs to be poured into by God.

“For the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.” We have admitted our need for Christ, and we openly receive Him. Now we have access to the unlimited resources of God. And when our time on earth is finished we will enter is eternal glory.

There is nothing wrong with admitting that you are in need. You will be better for it, because you will freely accept Christ. And you will receive what He has for you. We endanger our self when we get prideful and don’t admit how much we truly need Him to pour into us and make us right. I know I have some things I need God to work on in me. And I will let him work on me.

Much Love & God Bless

  1. I just discovered this blog and I already love it. However, I'm having trouble with the layout you're using - it only leaves half the screen for reading, which is kind of distracting. I'll be following along though. Thank you!
