Morning Coffee 8/22/14 Slow Your Roll
“In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.” (1 Peter 5:5-9 NLT)
Peter is writing to the Christians living as foreigners in Asia Minor (western Turkey today). In this portion of his letter he is writing to the young (in age) Christians. Peter tells them to submit to the authority of their elders that have been placed over them. Peter also tells them to humble themselves under Gods power and at the right moment they will be lifted up in honor. Peter encourages them Give all there cares and worries over to God. Peter tells them be alert, and watch out for enemy (the devil), and to stand strong in the Faith because they are not alone in there suffering.
This morning coffee is more personal for me. This week I got a head of myself, but God used my Pastor and few other brothers and sisters to speak to me and minister to me. This week I had to slow my roll. These morning devotions have taken off far greater than I could ever imagine. God as and is doing things I never anticipated. And God has given me a great deal of momentum. But I got slightly carried way with that momentum.
Twice this month my pastor was lead by God to have me open Sunday service with a devotion. Well this past Monday God gave me a devotion to write and I felt it was right for Sunday, so I texted my pastor asking if I could open service with it. I was expecting an immediate yes. But my pastor’s reply was “hold off let’s talk about it.” I was a bit disappointed. But on Wednesday night Bible study God set everything in line for me. We were studying 1 Peter 5, when we got to verses five through nine, it hit home big time.
God bought me back to Monday and the text conversation between my pastor and I. God has placed my pastor over the church and he is responsible for all that goes on in it. He is also responsible for helping the members grow in the walk with God. There are things that the pastor may see that the rest of us don’t. So when an elder comes to you with a word of caution, don’t take it personal. God placed our elders over us to help us grow and mature in our walk. They have been around the block a few times more than we have. And God has given them the wisdom and experience that we younger Christians don’t have.
We don’t know everything, so when you are told to slow down it’s for a good reason. Satan is looking for someone to devour. What better target than a young Christian with a pumped up ego, trying to take the world by storm. Fellow young Christians God has given you a gift and/or ministry? That is great, but be humble! Let those older than you continue to mentor lead and guide you! Remember it is not you doing the ministering; it is God ministering through you. We are just open vessels for Him to use, so let God continue His plan for you. And if one of your peers offers help or comes with advice do not block it out, listen to it, it may help you. And finally when your elders caution you, humble yourself submit to their authority and wait for God to give you your next move.
Much Love & God Bless
